I need to leave the US for tax purposes for 4 months and I would like to stay in Thailand. I have heard that the cambodia border runs are out. Is that true? I do not have any visa and I am currently in the US. Can I get some advice?
Wat Sisaket or Vat Sisaket as they spell it in Laos is the oldest surviving temple in Vientiane, the King Anouvong got them started on it in 1818, in 1828 when the Thais invaded Vientiane they didn't destroy this temple due to it looking like a Thai temple, in 1924 and 1930 the French restored the temple.
I should mention that the nasty evil Laos xenophobes charge dirty foreigners 5,000kip to get in and Laos people 2,000kip, although if you pay in baht it is 10baht, quite often in Vientiane it is best to ask the price in kip and baht as you quite often get better deals paying in different currencies, they also say it is a museum, a museum of what I have no idea, the main... Right so you have got to Nong Khai, the odds are you will either be at the bus station or the train station, if your at the train station you can walk to friendship bridge, just go to the main road, maybe 100meters, turn left over the tracks and walk another 100meters to the real big road, then turn right and walk another couple of hundred meters, if you get a Tuk Tuk then 20baht is a normal price.
If you are at Nong Khai coach station you got a bit further to go and will be ripped off by the lovely tuk tuk drivers, 60baht would be a good and fair price to pay to get to Friendship Bridge but I doubt you will get it from these thieves, if you already have a visa for getting... [Read More]
Laos Vientiane sao talad morning market is also open in the afternoons, funny name for it I suppose, probably open in the evenings as well, it is on Mahosot Road opposite one of the bus stations, sells the normal crap plus loads of electronic gear, also pirate dvds and that sort of stuff.
It is a pretty big market but the only thing I found of any interest was the jewelry repair stalls, that must be quite a skill.
The outside of the market area.
The sun shade or rain shade is too low for non Asians. ... [Read More]
That Dam or the black stupa as it translates is on Chantha Khoumane Road near the center of Vientiane, not really worth going out of your way to have a look at it although it has many legends about it.
The first is that it isn't renovated due to anybody working on it dies shortly after working on it, also it is supposedly built on the cave of a 7 headed dragon, in 1827 when the Thais invaded Vientiane the dragon supposedly helped the Lao people, so where did all the gold leaf go that these stupas normally have?
2009 Phuket International Blues Rock Festival dates set
After a great success this year, the 2009 Phuket International Blues Rock Festival is now being prepared to restage at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa during 20-21 February 2009. In an e-mail sent to Andaman News here at NBT Phuket the organizer Andy Anderson told us that next year they are planning twelve acts in total with five international bands, including California's Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88s. Mitch is a world class piano New Orleans style boogie-woogie bluesman and has set crowds abuzz around the world for 30+ years. Another excellent international... [Read More]
Some basic questions here if I may. I have no idea regarding construction and can usually use a screwdriver with the assistance of an instruction manual.
So please bear with me.
I also understand that the questions not being too specific are a bit like asking how long is a piece of string
I am looking to do some renovation of a house up north.
1) Put down a tiled floor. Currently a stone slab. would like to put down some OK not too extravagant floor tiling - area 65ft by 25ft
2) Install windows 10 of them into pre exisitng spaces. Wooden frames are there no glass. Perhaps better to put in brand new. About 3ft x 4ft
Has anyone else had problems lately with a work Permit? As I understood from Thai Visa I should have had no problems applying for a work permit using a non imm. O visa ( retirement)
At Chonburi when I applied yesterday I was informed that “This type of visa may be issued to applicants aged 50 years and over who wish to stay in Thailand for a period of not exceeding 1 year without the intention of working.
Holder of this type of visa is allowed to stay in Thailand for 1 year. Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited”
I was also informed that acc to Section 51 of... [Read More]
Phetmanyxay Hotel is on Mahosot Road near the morning market, it's about a 500meter walk to the Mekhong river, fan rooms from 300baht and aircon from 450baht and up, nice and clean and quiet.
On the 3rd floor is a free self serve coffee and tea area, they hide the coffee in the afternoons though, nice seating areas there on the 3rd floor aswell.
The bad points; unbelieveably they close at 11.30pm, yep if you aint back in time then your going to be sleeping on the streets of Vientiane, anyway as I passed out in a drunken stupor at about 6.30pm it didn't make a lot of difference to me.
All the rooms have tv's, they supply you with towels so thats... [Read More]
How often do they clean Pattaya's beaches? It seems like there is a story about people getting together to clean the beach every week? Why do they have to do it so often? Does trash dumped out at sea wash in or is it just people littering and throwing things from their boats?
Park chiefs hamper Navy plans for emergency helipads
PHUKET CITY: The Royal Thai Navy’s Third Fleet wants to build a network of helicopter landing pads on outlying islands so that tourists needing emergency medical treatment can be brought back to Phuket faster.
Rear-Admiral Supot Pruksa of the Third Naval Area Command announced the initiative yesterday following his opening address at a two-day maritime safety meeting attended by 60 naval officers at the Phuket Merlin Hotel.
All attendees are based in the six Andaman Coast provinces that comprise the Third Area Command, centered at the naval base at Cape Panwa.
I was doing a cleanup the other day and came across this old handwritten list tucked in a gardening magazine. I’ve no idea who wrote it and it looks like it has some good info.

1.FRUIT FLY
Flies are attracted to moisture, sugars and proteins and these form the base of any bait preparation. The time to place baits is approximately two months before fruit begins to ripen.
Ingredients:
1 litre of water
2 cups of urine

1 teaspoon of vegemite
